Choosing drum brushes

Start with the playing surface

For acoustic sweeps, check what surface your head maker recommends. For an electronic pad, consult the manufacturer’s brush guidance before selecting wire. Then choose the filament and gauge for the feel you are trying to get.

Think about storage between tunes

A retractable brush can tuck the fan into its handle when packed. A fixed design has a different storage footprint. If you need to carry sticks and brushes together, check pocket separation and length.

Department questions

How do I compare two wire brushes?

Look at wire gauge, tip angle and fan adjustment. Vic Firth’s Heritage uses light wire and retracts. Other models use different pull-rod settings or angled wire ends.

Which handle suits a player coming from sticks?

A fixed brush such as Vater’s VWTW has a 5A-sized wood grip. Compare it with a rubber-handle model if you prefer a different feel or a retractable design.

What should I check if a wire fan catches on my coated head?

Check your head maker’s recommendations and compare the wire ends. Vic Firth makes angled-wire models specifically to address catching on coated heads.
