Choosing concert and marching mallets

Match the technique to the head

A concert tom and a suspended-cymbal swell can share a multipurpose felt model if the maker lists both. When a score calls for a particular hardness, use the exact model documentation and confirm ambiguous descriptions before ordering.

Confirm the assembly and the count

A hand-held concert mallet is built around a shaft you grip. A kick beater mounts to a pedal. Check whether the concert listing supplies a pair or an individual mallet before buying for a two-hand part.

Department questions

Can one felt mallet suit every large drum?

Use the instrument, head grade and score to decide. Product families include different head sizes and hardness levels for specific uses.

How do I read the words medium and hard on the same listing?

Identify what each word describes. On Vic Firth’s MB2H, medium refers to head size and hard to the felt grade.

When should I compare a dedicated cymbal mallet?

If your part repeatedly calls for a specific swell or attack, compare models made for that cymbal role and check the head construction the score requires.
