Choosing keyboard percussion mallets

Start with the bars you play

Use the instrument maker’s guidance to establish compatible head materials. The Vic Firth M14 is a soft poly model for xylophone. A model described as soft in a yarn line is a different construction and may be intended for another instrument.

Check reach separately

Head diameter describes the point of contact, while overall length affects where you can reach. For four-mallet work, consider shaft feel, clearances and how many individual mallets the pack contains.

Department questions

What does a hardness label tell me?

It helps place the head within a maker’s line. Read it with the head material and documented instrument use before comparing models across lines.

Should I choose the softer head because I am playing quietly?

Check the instrument and the passage first. Material and hardness influence the beginning of a note, while the player controls dynamics. Read the maker’s intended instrument for the model.

How should I buy a matching spare?

Use the exact model code and shaft material. Balter’s Pro Vibe B25 family includes distinct birch and rattan variants.
