Choosing hickory drumsticks

Compare grip by measurement

If your 5A has a grip you like, measure the shaft before buying a model from another maker. A shared size code can describe two different diameters. Start with the model you own so that a change in taper or tip stays intentional.

Change reach without changing grip

Vic Firth’s standard 5A and X5A share the published 0.565-inch diameter. The X5A adds half an inch. Compare that pair when you need more reach. If you need more to hold, look at a wider shaft.

What if I want to keep the shaft and change the tip?

Look for the nylon sibling and check its published geometry. The Vic Firth 5AN retains the published length, diameter and taper of the 5A.

How can I tell which specification changes my grip?

Read the diameter where you hold the stick. The taper describes the narrowing closer to the tip and can change balance even at the same grip diameter.

What should I record when replacing a pair that works?

Record the exact model, tip material and finish from the pair or package. Compare the new listing’s pack size separately.
