Vic Firth American Classic 5AN Nylon Tip

The 5AN pair with nylon tips.
The 5AN pair with nylon tips.

When to choose it

If your wood-tip American Classic 5A already fits your hand, the 5AN lets you try a nylon tip with the same published shaft dimensions. Both models have a 16-inch length, a 0.565-inch diameter and a medium taper. On a ride pattern where you want more separation between notes, the teardrop nylon tip is the part Vic Firth designed for brighter, clearer articulation.

This is the lacquered 5AN. Check the longer X5A family if reach is the problem you are trying to solve, or compare the Vic Grip version if it is the handle finish that you want to change. The standard 5AN makes the most sense when the current grip and reach are already working for you.

Questions about this accessory

What if I want the nylon tip with more reach?

Look for a longer nylon-tip model and check both dimensions. This model keeps the standard 16-inch American Classic 5A length.

Is this the rubberized Vic Grip model?

This 5AN has a lacquer finish. Vic Firth uses the 5ANVG code for its Vic Grip version.

What should I listen for when comparing it to the wood 5A?

Play the same pattern on the same part of your ride cymbal. That keeps the main difference between the two published builds, the tip material, easy to compare.
