Vic Firth · Bundled drum rods
Vic Firth Original Rute Birch Rods

When to choose it
Choose the original Rute if you want to change the way a bundle contacts the kit without reaching for a second pair. Its movable band changes how tightly the sixteen birch dowels act together. Compare two band positions on the same backbeat to see which gives you the amount of definition you want.
The 0.750-inch handle is considerably wider than the 0.550-inch Hot Rods grip. If a conventional grip is more comfortable for you, account for that change before choosing based on the bundle alone. Vic Firth lists the original Rute for uses that include backbeats and cross-rim work.
